The Importance of Understanding Your Body Type

Knowing one’s body type or somatotype could be helpful for creating an effective workout plan, as it gives insight into the individual’s genetic muscle and fat distribution. This information can then be used to tailor a training program that focuses on specific strengths and weaknesses, optimises results, and reduces the risk of injury. Understanding somatotypes can also assist in setting realistic physical change expectations and informing nutrition decisions.

According to psychologist W.H. Sheldon, there are three main somatotypes:

  1. Ectomorphs are skinny, have a fast metabolism, and find it hard to gain weight or muscle.
  2. Mesomorphs have an athletic build, can easily gain muscle, and have a moderate metabolism.
  3. Endomorphs are round-bodied, have a slow metabolism, and store fat easily
  4. It’s common to have traits from different somatotypes, and somatotype is not the only factor in determining physical abilities.

Determining one’s somatotype can be done through:

  1. Visual examination
  2. Body measurements such as waist, hips, and arm circumference
  3. Body fat percentage testing

It’s important to note that somatotypes can change over time due to diet and exercise, and self-assessment or online calculators are only partially accurate. Therefore, it’s recommended to consult a professional such as a fitness coach or dietitian, for a more precise evaluation.
